Chapter 1
A leather-bound book floated in midair. Jaime jumped and slammed the door. He stared at the closet, frozen in place.
“What’s the matter?” Tahendra said. She was sitting on the couch near the window in his bedroom.
“It’s, um… I don’t know. Let me try that again. I thought...”
Tahendra walked over to Jaime to see what was up with the closet.
He opened the door again. The journal still hung in the air at eye level. Tahendra gasped. It felt like a person was waiting to talk to them. The two looked at one another and back to the mysterious book. Jaime stepped toward the book, trying to see how it was suspended. The journal floated in midair.
Tahendra was nervous. “We should look at it. I mean… Want to go first?”
With great apprehension Jaime walked to the book and grabbed it out of the air. It was far heavier than he expected. He thumbed through the pages and sat down on the couch. Tahendra watched Jaime’s every reaction. As he turned the pages, she saw drawings and handwriting in different colored inks.
“It doesn’t make sense. It’s weird. What was it doing in my closet?” Jaime was uncomfortable.
He put the leather book on the small coffee table by the couch and walked towards the closet. Tahendra moved closer to the book. It felt alive. She took her time. When she’d gathered her courage, she picked it up.
